Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all DJUSD campuses will be beginning the 2020-2021 school year in Distance Learning. See below for updates about how this will work for King.
How will Distance Learning work at King?

For Fall 2020, Distance Learning at King will provide all students with access to live Zoom class sessions and office hours, every day. Students are expected to attend all scheduled classes in order to earn credit. As usual, students will have a variety of homework and log options to choose from in order to accelerate their credit earning and move through courses at their own pace.

Our schedule will still have an AM/PM split, where students take either three morning session classes OR three afternoon session classes, but our class times will be modified to accommodate Distance Learning. Mondays will also be modified to focus on Social Emotional Learning, Community Building, and one-on-one credit checks with Advisors. For more information, check out our schedule.

How do I get started?
  • Devices and Internet:

All students must have access to an internet-connected device and reliable internet access at home. Do not plan to use your smart  phone as your only device for Distance Learning!

Anyone who does not have access to a computer and/or internet at may pick up a Chromebook from the District Office (526 B Street) every weekday between 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Information about Chromebook pickup and access to Wi-Fi hotspots is available on the
District website. Email Julie Ser for more information.

  • Email: Students should check their @djusdstudents.org email address every day for important updates and class information.

  • Zoom: DJUSD is switching from WebEx to Zoom for live class meetings. Students do not need to do anything to set up a Zoom account, but should check their student email and log in to Canvas to access Zoom meeting invitations.
  • Canvas: DJUSD is switching from Google Classrooms to Canvas for our learning management system. Canvas is where students will see their courses, find assignments, and turn in work to teachers. Unlike other DJUSD sites, King students will not see their classes in Canvas until the first day of school. To test your Canvas login:
    • Go to https://djusd.instructure.com and select "DJUSD Log In." Use the student's school Google account (@djusdstudents.org) to log in.
    • If you have trouble with your login, let your Advisor know, or contact Tech Support
    • Canvas tutorials and orientation videos are available on the DJUSD Restart website.

Week 1 (August 26-28)

King's motto is to encourage students to be Present, Positive, and Productive, in school and in life. To encourage this, we will be starting the 2020-2021 school year very slowly, to allow time for relationship-building and learning new technology. As a community, we are choosing to go slow on purpose, so that we can dig deep and make meaning of Distance Learning!

  • Monday 8/24 and Tuesday 8/25:
    • Advisors will reach out to students/families via email and/or phone to finalize schedule and confirm that all students have access to an internet-connected device for Distance Learning.
    • Students should check their @djusdstudents.org email address for updates and Zoom invitations.
    • Please complete the mandatory Student Survey and Parent/Guardian Survey at your earliest convenience.
  • Wednesday 8/26:

Logging in to Canvas and Zoom Classes

Starting on Friday 8/28, students will access all Zoom invitations through Canvas. To find your classes and Zoom links, visit https://djusd.instructure.com/ and use your student email and password sign in. You should see each of your classes listed. Choose your first class of the day by clicking on the tile for that course. Find the “Zoom” button on the left side of the screen, and click to open the upcoming Zoom meetings for that class. Locate the correct date for the meeting, and click “Join” when it’s time!

Pictured here is an example of what a student in 1st Period PE would see when they clicked on the PE course tile after logging in to Canvas.

Find the Zoom button.

Click on the "Join" link for the correct date when it is time for your class to start!

What are my classes?
Advisors will work with students to determine your schedule for Quarter 1. All students will attend three 45-minute classes each day.

If you take Study Skills or have an extended schedule, you may have 4+ classes. Talk to your Advisor!
How do I earn credits?
1) Attend your three classes via Zoom every day. You will earn 1 unit per class on days that you participate fully during the 45 minute class period per day.
2) Attend your Zoom meetings and one-on-one Credit Check every Monday (these will be during your regularly scheduled class times).
3) Complete homework and additional assignments for your classes, at your own pace, to accelerate your credit earning. The expectation is that you will do 1 hour of additional homework per class per day (which would give you an approximately 1 unit per class per day).
Front Office Hours
Beginning September 14, 2020, the King High office will be open on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:00-11:30 a.m., and on Thursdays from 8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Contact Administrative Assistant Maricela Ortega with any questions.
